An outstanding book of essays by Stephen Hawking over the course of his career. The latest in the book is from the early nineties, so new advances have been made since these were written, Several were on more personal than professional topics, including his childhood. I enjoyed those especially. He seems to have been a very brilliant, but humble person throughout his life. I would have like to learn more about his personal life.I enjoyed the professional essays as well, but they were harder for me to understand. He did a good job of presenting the material so a non-physics person could get the jest of it. Having some scientific background I appreciated his candor and willingness to talk about the possibility that his work would be proven wrong in the future. That physics was a fluid science and one has to keep an open mind. So many answers just lead to more questions. How they are able to look at things on a tiny scale and extrapolate that to the universe is mind boggling. It got my imagination fired up for sure. It's a pretty quick read. I could have gotten through it sooner if I hadn't gone back to reread several essays to try to understand them better.Stephen Hawking was a great man and we were fortunate he chose to share that greatness with the world.
I got it after I read A Brief History of Time. This book is a collection of essays and speeches that professor Hawking have given over the years. I feel like it lacks of continuity throughout the book while same concepts are being explained again and again in the same way. I thought it would be a book which professor Hawking would talk about the black holes and baby universe in a way that is similar to that in A Brief History of Time, but it's not really the case. The first few chapters are about Hawking's educational backgrounds and about what he's been doing. In latter chapters it does includes black holes and baby universe chapters. I actually skipped the first few chapters and just read the latters. I would rather call this book ' The other essay and black holes and baby universes' is the chronological order of the book stays the same, or I would move the first few chapters to be a latter part of the book or even publishing a new book about Hawking's backgrounds. I just don't like the way they combine those essays and speeches into one book and call it a 'book'.
I like how Professor Hawking not only focuses on Black Holes but also on personal details of himself in this book so the reader can get a better idea of who he is outside Cosmology and Theoretical Physics such as his childhood, taste in music, and his experience living with ALS and how he views having ALS in a more positive light rather than a negative one. My favorite essay was probably the one where Professor Hawking discusses how science has been viewed by the public or whether there is an end to Theoretical Physics in the future. A very good follow-up to A Brief History Of Time and a good book for those who are looking to learn more about one of the most brilliant minds in history or who already fans of Professor Hawking's work in Cosmology, Astronomy, Theoretical Physics, and Mathematics.
Black Holes and Baby Universes is a collection of decades of knowledge and exploration. These essays offer the unique opportunity to view the wonders of the universe around us through the eyes of the most brilliant physicist and astronomer of our time. Using easy to grasp language and examples, Stephen Hawking removes the barriers that kept the public from learning more about these topics. I highly recommend this book to all levels of education and interest.
Because the movie about Professor Hawking, THEORY OF EVERYTHING, has just been released. This book is away to get to know him better. In this book he shares his life's story and what lead him to start his writing career. This title is a must have if you want a fuller picture about one of the best writers concerning theoretical physics and cosmology today.
This collection of essays from Stephen Hawking is likely to be his only "autobiography". It's collected from several lectures and articles, and it reviews highlights of his scientific contributions (in layman's terms) as well as some aspects of his personal life. He also has a pretty good sense of humor so I found this book fairly easy to read and interesting as well.
I understand the history of universe research from these books!
Stephen Hawking is my favorite science author, and I have learned almost everything I know about physics from this man's books. This book gives some very interesting facts about his life in the beginning. It includes much biographical info not included in his other books, as well as the usual physics he includes in his other books.Highly recommended book. And cheap (only a few dollars if bought from an Amazon merchant).
