Although I can only claim to have actually read a bit more than half of this 188 page reference, at this point there is no doubt in my mind that anyone seriously interested in using one or more of the many hundreds of options for investing in a 529 plan or plans to help finance a beneficiary's future college costs, is going to have to allow for some serious research time to evaluate which ones offer the best combination of flexibility, restrictions, investment returns and tax advantages - among other attributes - or else pay a financial advisor to do the spadework for them. Notwithstanding, the book is highly recommended precisely because it does dive into the weeds of these plans to present the reader with a copious amount of useful information to illuminate their follow-up research efforts. And, I say this without yet having gone to the authors website, which presents far more data to enable decision making than presented in the text.Even the authors admit that one could literally spend years - even a decade or more - trying to absorb all the potential pros and cons of these plans, which are offered by 49 states and the District of Columbia, and, in the main, are offered to anyone capable of investing in such - whether or not they live in their state of residence, or that of the intended beneficiary. Of course, they don't recommend that, but for anyone interested in seriously comparing the attributes of one plan to others, it is going to take some realistic goal setting of priorities upfront if you don't want to get bogged down into a "paralysis by analysis" situation. And that goal setting itself will depend on the level of understanding one can grasp from reading the book and the supplementary, but large website data sets offered. I have yet to pursue these, but understand from reading that there are good comparative data sets to help reduce the decision making effort.Thus, the book is highly recommended as a guide to these plans, but a cautionary note is added about the potential workload for the DIY'er to determine a satisfactory outcome. A minor doubt: There may be one or more sections in the book which are not completely brought up to date with the current federal tax laws, but these probably are minimal. In any event, the reader needs to update their knowledge of these federal tax rule changes independently on their own or through their CPA/financial advisor - and how their state or other states being looked at have updated their own tax filing rules in response - before committing to one or more 529 plans.
