I got this for my niece, but I read it as well, and a lot of the advice can honestly apply to any age, though you're better off if you start young! It's so important for people to feel financially independent, and the author offers so many ideas--with added humor--on how to live your life well (relationships, friendships, entertainment, travel) while still being financially responsible and planning for the future. At the end of each chapter, she offers takeaways, a good way for readers to have something to refer back to, highlight or use to make their own plan. For as much advice as we can give the younger people in our lives, it works so much better it it's in writing--in this case, Twenties in Your Pocket.
I am slightly out of the target market of this book, but I still found it to be a useful and relevant (and sometimes funny) read. Ms Anania covers lots of basics like banks, credit cards, and student debt in an easy-to-understand way. And you don't feel judged if you have debt either!However, I was surprised by how much non-"traditional" personal finance stuff was in here too. Great ideas for how to live on a shoestring budget (like how to still have parties and be social without spending a ton of money), how to deal with money and relationships, and how to deal with specific money issues for women. If I had read this in my early 20's I would have been a lot better off!
This is a fantastic resource for young adults starting out and looking to gain solid financial footing for a future of financial independence. I wish I had a resource like this to read when I was in my 20s. Instead I gathered bits and pieces of information from different sources. This is a well organized, well written, fun to read book. A great gift for soon to be college or high school grads!
I consider myself financially savvy and I found this book quite insightful. There were several topics that I thought I understood well, and I still learned new insights and tips. The writing was concise and each chapter was packaged in comfortable bite-sized lengths. If you don't like excessive technical details and wonkiness, you'll be fine with this book which is compact and manageable with its advice. On top all of that, the writing is more accessible through funny anecdotes--I found myself chuckling throughout (something I wasn't anticipating from a financial advice book).
This book is funny. Honestly, I would love a follow up book about home maintenance, health, or any other “adulting†topic.The whole book felt like you were just learning from a friend who has plenty of encouragement and stories of her own mishaps to help you realize that normal people do these responsible things and challenges are expected, therefore YOU can tackle these sometimes intimidating tasks, too. And if there are snafus along the way, you aren’t derailed or immediately feel like an idiot or let it slow you down on your next goals.
I will soon be 62 years old and bought several copies of “Twenties in Your Pocket†for the young people in my life. Of course, I read it first. This book was a fast read, full of valuable information for getting ahead in today’s world. Ms. Anania includes her life experiences making this book relatable and compelling. After finishing this book, I wished that this smart advice would have been available to me when I was in my twenties. Thanks go to Kate Nixon Anania for guiding todays young people with their finances.
Great book for anyone in their twenties who wants to know how to manage their money effectively. It is an easy read, yet it is filled with many useful tips that cover all the basic financial topics and issues that most twenty-somethings will face but never fully understand. If you are a twenty-something or have a son or daughter in their twenties, you will want to read this book. It will give the reader the foundation they need to take control of their finances and live a better and less stressful life.
This is a must read for the high school student in your life, or anyone who is struggling to understand and organize their personal finances. It’s a very quick and easy read. I think the table of contents and actionable take-aways at the end of each section make this a high impact book. Lots of finance books can be overwhelming in figuring out how to apply the advice but this book helps you take action in your own life with short and concise checklists.
