They're big enough to conduct high-impact experiments that can improve the quality of life, and sufficiently focused that they can rally political support to implement them.From my vantage point in Chicago and its thriving civic tech community, I've seen great things achieved when government opens up its data and lets its residents innovate. Smart cities can go even further.Barlow and Levy-Bencheton achieve a remarkable balance in their writing. Remember that apocryphal "History of the World" test exam ("Describe the history of the world. Be complete, be concise. You have one hour.") It feels like they pulled it off; I now have a solid overview of what cities are doing with data, what technologies they're using, many of the successes, and the many challenges. It's accessible and it's refreshingly politics-free, because "unless you're an anarchist, you believe in good government."If you need an intro to "smart cities" (and unless you're an anarchist, you probably do), this should be it.
