Saved without a doubt is one of the foundational texts from John MacArthur. He is able to cover the topics of God's sovereignty and man's responsibility along with the passages often used to show one can lose their salvation and how when read in context there is no contradiction or issue with God's power to save an individual. He makes it clear that we are also not robots, but have responsibility in the plan of God.Although the entire text is about salvation and the tests Scripture outlines to ensure you are or are not a Christian, I did not see as much weaving of the Gospel message throughout the book for those struggling in this area. He does touch on it in a few different chapters, but felt it could have been woven more into the text as a Christian would never be weary of hearing the Gospel message over and over.The book is an easy read and is rather short in general. I would recommend that anyone who has ever, which is everyone, questioned their salvation; this book is for you.This is the first time I have listened to this narrator and enjoyed his reading of the book. Not a book that requires super strong narration like a non-fiction book might. However Tom was able to keep it going without the text being boring or monotone.
Both on a theoretical and practical level the doctrine of assurance is often viewed by Christians as a key subject for their faith. MacArthur, in his usual fashion, handles the subject biblically and clearly.He carefully distinguishes between the three concepts that are often mangled together without much clarity: security, assurance, and perseverance. He explains the objective facts about Christians while not neglecting the need to endure. His theological pillars of God's sovereignty in salvation and of man's responsibility to truly repent and live a godly live post-conversion are demonstrated to be he only foundation on which a true doctrine of security and assurance can really stand.This book is great for any Christian: to assure those with doubts, to equip those who are rightly assured, and to warn those who aren't so consistent between their profession and their practice.
I appreciated this book by John MacArthur on the topic of the Christian assurance of salvation. This book is biblical, pastoral and practical; it will certainly help the believer understand the Gospel better and applying it to the subject of assurance. The book is divided into three parts: After establishing the biblical warrant for the Reformed doctrine of the perseverance of the Saints, part two feature 11 tests on whether or not one is a believer according to 1 John followed by part three that ties the loose ends: Dealing with doubt, adding virtue which thereby adds more assurance of one’s salvation and biblical encouragement to persevere. I particularly enjoy chapter 7, “Adding Virtue upon Virtue†which is an exposition of 2 Peter 1, with MacArthur’s insight into the Greek terms and what it means. MacArthur does a masterful job of encouraging the believer with the reality of what God has done and promise to do. I recommend it to every believer whether they are struggling with whether or saved or whether they are already assured.
I'm 13 years old, and this book was certainly one of my favorites. This book answered lots of my questions on salvation, and touched on all the useful details for spiritual growth and assurance. When I was going through doubt last year, this book would have been of much use to me. I found it to be an enjoyable and thought provoking read, and I recommend it to all ages.
John MacArthur is one of the best preachers and commentators on God's Word. He brings in scripture from all over the Bible to support and expand on what he is writing about. If after reading this you don't know if you're saved you need to re-read the book. If then you still don't know... MacArthur talks about the misconception of believing you're saved and then continuing to live your worldly life as if nothing has changed, continuing to love the world and not seeking Heavenly things. If you have doubts, you need to read this book.
We all have our doubts and it is good to have doubts, to question what we place our faith in, and we learn over time to lose faith in those things which are not true. This book, author, walks along side of you on that road to a stronger faith. John is not asking you to stop thinking and to accept things on blind faith, quite the opposite he encourages you to think, to know what your faith is all about, to dig deep into the Word of God to find your foundation of your faith in strong doctrine, so that you cannot be swayed by fad churches filled with decoy Christians and pastors that preach false teachings which appear easier to accept.
This is another great book by MacArthur.I've struggled with assurance for years for anumber of reasons--mostly shame and guilt.This book really helped.I would recommend you read it over and over againif your experience is similar--I will.Don't stay trapped by the enemy with feelings of guilt,condemnation,shame or doubt--take a small step forward.Jesus came for the purpose of setting us free--not holdingus in chains.I also think that every Christian would be wise to read thebook as well. Great concepts, truth, and background to helpany Christian become grounded in their faith. My only regret isthat I didn't read it 30 years ago.
I was insecure about my salvation and this book helped give me a more Biblically grounded security. The Good News of Jesus Christ starts and ends with the grace of God. It is very clear, well written, and supports its approach with a ton of Biblical references. Whoever you are, you need to be sure you are not going to Hell. This book will help you evaluate your salvation Biblically and explains lucidly what salvation is.
